To Begin A New Year

When exactly it started taking more persuasion to get that first leg out of bed, took longer to get bathed and dressed, became more of an effort to get breakfast and take the medications, I am not exactly sure. Then there was the nagging pain in the feet which turned to numbness and then a strong pain in my leg. The neuropathy now steals part of my ability to walk or stand for any length of time.
My daily experience is now working with the social security office to get my disability benefits started and organizing my company work with others while I sit out on medical leave. Waiting is the hard part. With no income the bills are piling up and promises to catch up when payments begin seem to ring hollow in some ears. We pray and will make it through.
Another new experience is having a handicapped car tag. This allows us to park in handicapped parking spaces. I had never given them much thought before, but now have a great deal of appreciation for them. When you can’t go but abut 150 feet before needing to recover your feet and legs they are a real blessing.
As the financial crisis loomed another blessing was http://www.needymeds.org/. Through this site I was quickly approved for some of my more expensive medications for free. If you are on a limited income and your doctor approves these folks can be a real help.
I was glad to see a report today that a low carb diet is even better than a high fiber died for diabetics. I have known this from personal experience for a long time. Go Low Carb! And stay blessed. Jeff

Diabetes Management is Full Time Job

There are only 24 hours in each day and diabetics who are serious about controlling the disease know it can be a time consuming challenge. Taking blood glucose readings, planning meals, shopping for foods that won’t spike blood sugars, doctor appointments, exercise and keeping up with the latest information would wear out a non diabetic. How much time does the average diabetic spend on controlling their diabetes? The answers may surprise you.

Blood Glucose Monitoring – Up to 30 minutes depending on your monitor and the number of times you test per day.

Meal Planning – Up to one hour. Reading labels and counting carbohydrates is a time consuming task. Then trying to adjust recopies to make them work in a diabetic diet is a further time challenge.

Meal Preparation – Up to 90 minutes. Eating fresh foods requires more preparation time than prepared food. Chopping, pealing, cooking and tossing all add to the time spent on meals. However in order to conquer the carbs it is time well invested.

Shopping – Up to 2 hours. Reading labels, counting carbohydrates and fat grams all take extra time. Figuring out what to do with a new found low carb ingredient and finding the other items to plan with it can cause a number of trips back and forth across the store. Hopefully shopping does not have to be done every day, but, on days when it is necessary it can become a real time budget buster.

Exercise – 40 minutes to 1 hour. Those stretch exercises and the walk around the neighborhood are not so bad. It is the drive to the gym, 30 minutes on a treadmill, 10 minutes on a stationary bike and a few minutes lifting weights, then the drive back home that eats up your time. This time is well worth the effort, just be aware of how it cuts into today’s 24 hours.

Keeping Up with the Latest Discoveries – 30 minutes. There is always a new article to read, web site to explore or news flash on television. Keeping up with all the new developments in diabetes management can be a challenge, but, a task that may make your life easier.

Doctor Appointments – 2 ½ hours. Besides your family doctor, your doctor for diabetes, feet, eyes, teeth, and any other specialties you may need, all require appointments and a time commitment. There is preparation for the appointment, appropriate dress, drive time, wait time, examinations and the return trip home. Don’t forget stopping to fill any new prescriptions too.

Support Groups – 1 hour. If you have felt the need to join a support group they will consume some of your time. However, the good news is it is time very well spent, considering the return on the investment.

Medications – 15 to 30 minutes. Counting pills or taking injections is no fun but something diabetics live with from once to several times each day. This is the time you spend actually causing your blood sugar levels to go down, so it is well spent time.

Stress Busters – 30 minutes. Stress causes a lot of problems for diabetics so spending time eliminating it is a wise move. Meditation, relaxation, prayer, quiet time or yoga are all worthwhile activities.

Naturally, you will not perform all of these activities in a single day. If you did it would consume more time than is in a normal work day. Eight hour work days pose another whole set of time eating problems. Pre-planning and preparing a diabetic friendly lunch can be a huge time user. As you work to manage diabetes become aware of the time it takes and plan for it. You will be spending much more time than you think staying ahead of you blood sugar levels and staying healthy. Careful management of your diabetes and time will help you stay well and stay blessed.
